What is a Raw Carrot Salad?

The raw carrot salad has grown in popularity over the last few years but it was originally created by Dr. Ray Peat.

Dr. Ray Peat is an American biologist who has spent over 40 years researching health and nutrition. He is also an expert in thyroid health.

Dr. Ray Peat’s work and research are what originally inspired me to start eating a pro-metabolic diet.

He recommends eating several raw carrots every day to help support the thyroid and gut health.

Dr. Ray Peat claims the fiber in carrots helps to eliminate bad bacteria and toxins from the intestinal tract.

He created the raw carrot salad to help support the thyroid even further by adding a few extra beneficial ingredients such as sea salt, olive oil, and apple cider vinegar.

The fat in the oil and the acid in the apple cider vinegar help to increase the antimicrobial properties of the carrot fibers.

What Does A Raw Carrot Salad Do?

Raw carrots contain fibers with anti-microbial and anti-fungal properties which sets them apart from other fiber sources.

These anti-microbial and anti-fungal fibers help to suppress and prevent the overgrowth of bacteria and fungus in the intestines.

These fibers also bind to estrogen and endotoxins and safely and effectively carry them through the digestive system and eventually out of the body.

Do Raw Carrots Remove Estrogen?

Most of the research regarding raw carrots removing estrogen from the body comes from the work of Dr. Ray Peat. In this article he states:

Because of my own experience in finding that eating a raw carrot daily prevented my migraines, I began to suspect that the carrot fiber was having both a bowel-protective and an antiestrogen effect. Several women who suffered from premenstrual symptoms, including migraine, hadtheir serum estrogen measured before and after the “carrot diet,” and they found that the carrot lowered their estrogen within a few days, as it relieved their symptoms.

According to Dr. Ray Peat raw carrots have the ability to remove estrogen from the body.

Raw Carrot Salad Benefits

It’s hard to believe something as simple as a carrot salad could have so many different health benefits. But it does. You can check out some of the major health benefits of the raw carrot salad below.

Balance Hormones

The raw carrot salad can help to balance hormones due to its ability to detoxify estrogen.

So many women (and men) are estrogen dominant and don’t even know it.

More people are suffering from estrogen dominance due to chronic stress. When cortisol rises due to stress, progesterone decreases which leads to estrogen dominance.

Long-term birth control use can lead to estrogen dominance as well.

And let’s not forget about the insane amount of xenoestrogens we are being bombarded with on a daily basis. Xenoestrogens are in thousands of everyday personal care and beauty products.

You can click here to learn more about xenoestrogens.

Xenoestrogens can mimic the behavior of estrogen in the body and cause major hormonal imbalances.

Common estrogen dominance symptoms include:

  • Premenstrual dysphoric disorder
  • Painful menstrual cramps
  • Heavy periods
  • Acne
  • Fibrocystic breasts
  • Mood swings
  • And more!!!!

Eating a raw carrot salad on a daily basis can help to remove excess estrogen from the body and balance hormones over time.

Many women including myself have experienced fewer negative symptoms associated with our menstrual cycles such as lighter periods, less cramping, and reduced mood swings thanks to the raw carrot salad!

Reduce Inflammation

Overgrowth of bacteria and fungi in the intestinal tract can lead to intestinal inflammation.

The raw carrot salad has the ability to remove and prevent bacteria and fungus from accumulating in the intestines which helps to reduce inflammation in the intestines.

Improve Gut Health

Thanks to the anti-microbial and anti-fungal fibers, the raw carrot is able to reduce and prevent the overgrowth of bad bacteria in the intestines which helps to improve gut health over time.

Many fans of the raw carrot salad report improved digestion, less bloating, and less constipation.

Supports The Liver

The raw carrot salad is able to support the liver by removing toxins from the GI tract so the liver does not become overburdened.

Over 70% of hormone conversion occurs in the liver so when you have a happy, healthy liver you also have happy, healthy hormones!

Increases Thyroid Hormone Conversion

The liver is actually responsible for converting the thyroid storage hormone (T4) to the active thyroid hormone (T3).

So because the raw carrot salad is able to support the liver by removing toxins from the GI tract the liver is able to function properly and convert thyroid hormone more efficiently.

Simple Raw Carrot Salad Recipe

The original raw carrot salad created by Dr. Ray Peat is below.

I personally prefer to use coconut oil instead of olive oil. I prefer fractionated coconut oil over solid coconut oil just because it blends easier. But either one is fine to use.

You can also use white vinegar instead of apple cider vinegar.

I highly recommend using organic products whenever possible especially organic carrots. Otherwise, you’ll basically be adding toxins to your intestines instead of trying to remove them.

Also, make sure to use fresh, whole carrots. No baby or frozen carrots!

The verdict is still out in regards to whether or not you should consume or toss out the outer layer of the carrot.

Some say it’s not good for you and some say it is good for you.

I personally don’t toss out the outer layer. I recommend doing whatever you feel like doing and try not to worry about it too much.

Either way, always make sure to wash/scrub the carrots before peeling.

How To Make A Raw Carrot Salad

To make this salad simply shred 1-2 carrots vertically using a vegetable peeler into a bowl. Then add the oil, salt, and vinegar and mix them together.

And that’s it!

Feel free to add additional ingredients. Some people like to add raisins, pumpkin seeds, dill, or apples.

I personally prefer my raw carrot salads as simple as possible and I tend to stick with the four main ingredients.

How Often Should I Eat A Raw Carrot Salad?

Raw carrots salads should be eaten on a daily basis for maximum benefit.

The recipe is super easy and only takes a minute or two to put together. But if you find it really inconvenient you could shred/peel a bunch of carrots in advance and keep them submerged in filtered water in the refrigerator until you are ready to use them.

The water keeps the carrots from drying out and wilting. When you are ready to make a raw carrot salad simply remove some of the carrots from the water, pat dry with a paper towel, and add in the remaining ingredients.

Final Thoughts

Although there aren’t any official studies confirming the benefits of raw carrots and the raw carrot salad – I am fully convinced of its ability to detoxify estrogen, balance hormones, and everything else I listed above.

I’ve spoken to way too many women who have experienced the same benefits I have from consuming this salad on a daily basis.

And I definitely don’t think that’s a coincidence.

So if you are struggling with symptoms of estrogen dominance or digestion issues I highly recommend trying the raw carrot salad.

I know it probably doesn’t sound super yummy but it’s actually good and I wish I would have tried it a lot sooner!

The taste is kind of different but not in a bad way.
