It can be frustrating to be missing a key ingredient for a recipe, but before you make a trip to the grocery store, remember that you may still have some options right there in your own kitchen. A recipe substitution can sometimes alter the flavor, color, texture, or volume of the food but will still result in an acceptable product. Here are some easy substitutions you may be able to make with other ingredients you may have on hand.
- One clove garlic equals 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder.
- ¼ teaspoon baking soda plus 5/8 teaspoon cream of tartar equals 1 teaspoon baking powder.
- Make your own barbecue sauce by combining ¾ cup ketchup, 2 tablespoons mustard, and 2 tablespoons brown sugar.
- Make a buttermilk substitute with one tablespoon lemon juice or vinegar plus enough regular milk to make one cup. Allow to stand five minutes before using.
- All-purpose flour (1 cup minus 2 teaspoons), 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder, and ½ teaspoon salt equals 1 cup self-rising flour.
- 1 whole egg equals 2 tablespoons mayonnaise (for cake batter) or use ½ teaspoon baking powder, 1 tablespoon vinegar, and 1 tablespoon liquid (baking use only).
- If you don’t have fresh herbs on hand, 1 tablespoon fresh herbs equal 1 teaspoon dried leaf herbs or ½ teaspoon ground dried herbs.
- If you want to make salad dressing, but are out of mayonnaise, you can replace it with sour cream or yogurt (1 cup equals 1 cup mayonnaise).
