Easter time is right around the corner and one of our favorite ways as a family to illustrate the true meaning of Easter is with this resurrection roll recipe.
Resurrection rolls aka Empty tomb rolls illustrates the resurrection of Jesus. Jesus’ body was in the tomb (the marshmallow) and 3 days later was not. When you pull the resurrection rolls out of the oven, the large marshmallow will be gone.
We have resurrection rolls, or empty tomb rolls, as some call them every year around Easter. Not only is it a good illustration but they are also just delicious rolls so double the recipe. They serve as perfect Easter rolls for your Easter breakfast or lunch.
Quick & Easy Resurrection Rolls aka Empty Tomb Rolls Easter Treat Recipe
You know I like to keep things simple around here and this recipe is no exception. You can whip these homemade resurrection rolls up in under 15 minutes which means not only is it a wonderful way to share the story of Easter but its a delicious way to enjoy breakfast, a snack or dessert too.
Resurrection Rolls Ingredients
- 1/4 Cup Melted Butter
- 8 Large Marshmallows
- 1/4 Cup Sugar
- 1/2 Tablespoon Cinnamon
- Package of Crescent Roll Dough
Resurrection Rolls Directions
This is a great recipe for little hands to help you in the kitchen. It’s not too messy and a great way to spend some time together. Go ahead and preheat the oven to 350 degrees and spray a muffin tin with cooking spray.
Then, mix together the 1/4 Cup sugar and 1/2 tablespoon of cinnamon in a small bowl (like a cereal bowl).
Unfold, the crescent dough into triangles and place 1 marshmallow in the middle. Then, roll up. Make sure you leave at least one little hole in one side so you can see the melted marshmallow when it’s done cooking.
Once the marshmallow has been wrapped up in the crescent roll, melt butter in the microwave and brush the melted butter onto the rolls using a pastry brush. Then, dip in the cinnamon-sugar mixture. Place in the muffin tin and continue until all the crescent rolls have been used. You can also use a baking sheet but we prefer a muffin tin so the melting marshmallow doesn’t make a mess in your oven.
Did I mention you might want to double the batch? Everyone always wants more than one?
The resurrection rolls bake for 9-11 minutes (or whatever your crescent roll instructions states), pull out of the oven and allow to cool for a few minutes. By experience, I can tell you they are best served fresh! You can remind your kids when you put the marshmallow rolls in the oven, it’s like putting Christ’s body in the tomb and then when you remove the rolls from the oven, the disappearing marshmallow signifies Christ’s resurrection, the real meaning of Easter.

Easter Resurrection Story Explained via Resurrection Rolls
At Easter we celebrate Jesus, our savior, going to the cross for each of our sins. We are all sinners in need of a savior. Thankfully, God sent Jesus, his son, to die for us. After Jesus died on the cross, his friends spent time wrapping of Jesus just like the crescent roll wraps around the large marshmallow on good Friday. He was then laid in a tomb after he died on the cross.
This is a fun object lesson for young children. The marshmallow loosely represents Jesus in the resurrection roll illustration. The marshmallow goes in the tomb, but after some time (cooking) it’s gone. Jesus conquered death and is alive today.
Jesus had conquered death. His sacrifice gives us forgiveness for our sins and eternal life in heaven. For the full resurrection story, read John 19-20.
