Mashed potatoes or stuffing? Most popular Thanksgiving side dish in U.S., Ohio revealed (1)

Thanksgiving is almost here, which means it’s time to start thinking about thawing the turkey for your annual feast.

While the turkey (or ham) may be the centerpiece of any Thanksgiving table, it’s often the side dishes that get the most attention. In fact, two-thirds (67%) of Americans prefer Thanksgiving side dishes to the main entrée, according to the “State of the Sides Report 2023″ from Campbell’s Soup Company.

Furthermore, Americans on average serve five side dishes on their Thanksgiving table each year, and more than half (54%) said they would be content with only side dishes on their plate, up 17% from 37% in last year’s report.

The “State of the Sides Report 2023″ also detailed the most popular side dishes across the U.S. and by individual states.

Stuffing / dressing is the most popular side dish in Ohio, according to Campbell’s. It’s also the most popular side in neighboring Indiana, as well as Wisconsin, Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina, New Jersey, Vermont, Maine and Alaska. Nationally, however, stuffing / dressing ranks the second-most popular side dish.

Mashed potatoes, meanwhile, is the most popular side dish in the U.S. and the top-ranking side in Ohio-bordering states such as Pennsylvania, Michigan, West Virginia and Kentucky.

The Top 5 most popular Thanksgiving side dishes in the U.S., according to the “State of the Sides Report 2023,” are:

1. Mashed potatoes (up from 2nd place in 2022)

2. Stuffing / dressing (down from 1st place in 2022)

3. Mac & cheese (up from 5th place in 2022)

4. Yams / Sweet potatoes (down from 3rd place in 2022)

5. Green bean casserole (down from 4th place in 2022)

About two-thirds (66%) of Americans say that side dishes are one way to share their cultural heritage on the Thanksgiving table, according to the report.

And if one Thanksgiving feast isn’t enough sides, nearly three in five (59%) Americans plan to celebrate Friendsgiving, as well, this year. Among those celebrating Friendsgiving, 83% say they consider a recipe to be special if it was recommended by a celebrity and/or influencer.
