Why are so many kids struggling to read?According to The National Assessment of Educational Progress, only 34% of fourth graders are proficient readers.That number drops to 31% for eighth graders. And it peaks at a mere 37% for twelfth grade.While there are many, many reasons that affect these numbers, including the impact of Covid-19, there's one big problem that is starting to get recognition: we aren't teaching kids how to read.We have decades of research into how children learn to read and spell—the Science of Reading.
