If you’re like most of us, then you probably ate bread almost daily before starting the keto diet. Giving it up is one of our biggest complaints!
The problem is that most bread is high in carbs and contains inflammatory ingredients, such as wheat or enriched flours. What if you could find bread that is nutritious, low-carb, high-fat, and loaded with protein to make a perfect keto snack and go well with your tea and coffee?
Well, this keto collagen bread is exactly that. The collagen protein powder used in this recipe is necessary for the density as well as for revolutionizing your health.
Collagen is a type of protein that is needed for the proper functioning of the whole body. It makes up 25-35% of the protein content in your body. It supports the skin elasticity and helps us look younger.
Research shows that collagen also supports joint health and can be used to treat joint pain and disease (1). This is because collagen is located in your connective tissues and supports your skeletal structure.
According to one study, collagen supplementation can help reduce the risk of joint deterioration in high-risk groups (2). Collagen is also useful for wound healing and skin aging (3).
Collagen can be sourced from marine, chicken, or bovine sources. I recommend going with grass-fed bovine as it contains the largest concentrations of the most types of collagen (there are three types total).
I use Perfect Keto’s Collagen because it contains the best quality hydrolyzed collagen. It is paired with MCTs and gut-healthy acacia fiber, which makes this bread super ketogenic.
I use coconut flour as the base of this bread, along with collagen. Coconut milk is used to help with the consistency since coconut flour absorbs a lot of moisture.
Finally, you can garnish your bread with sesame seeds, nuts, or coconut flakes.
If you like it chocolatey, you can add unsweetened cocoa powder or chocolate chips in.
How to Make Low Carb Protein Bread Using Collagen Peptides
Preheat the oven to 325 F.
Combine coconut flour, xanthan gum, baking powder, and collagen powder in a bowl. I used this Unflavored Perfect Keto’s Collagen.
In another small bowl, whisk egg yolks, coconut milk, and melted coconut oil together.
In another bowl, beat egg whites until it forms peaks.
Pour the egg yolk mixture into the egg white mixture. Mix well then fold in the collagen-coconut flour mixture. Mix again until incorporated but don’t overmix.
KetoCOLLAGEN contains types I and III of bovine collagen from beef bone broth. EASY TO USE AND PACKED WITH NUTRIENTS: Each serving provides 15 grams of collagen, 3 grams of fat and zero carbs!
Collagen is an amazing protein to include in a ketogenic diet. Collagen is the body's most abundant protein found in the skin, bones and cartilage. People following a keto diet will usually opt to include the skin, bones and cartilage in their meat sources, and they often drink bone broth – a rich source of collagen.
Naturally free from carbohydrates, collagen supplements, whether powders, capsules, or drinks, seamlessly fit into a keto regimen. This means that while you're nourishing your body with high-quality protein, you're not adding any hidden carbs that could disrupt your state of ketosis.
Bread that's low in carbs, so hasn't been made using grains and starchy food, is classed as being keto-friendly. Keto bread may taste, feel and look slightly different to traditional bread, but it's still bread, just a low carb version of it.
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body. Its fiber-like structure is used to make connective tissue. Like the name implies, this type of tissue connects other tissues and is a major component of bone, skin, muscles, tendons, and cartilage.
The minimum effective dose of collagen is 10 grams per day. One scoop of your Perfect Keto Collagen Protein powder contains 17 grams, which will provide all of the benefits listed above plus a bonus boost. If you take a minimum of 10 grams of collagen every day, your body will begin to see the benefits.
Balanced Protein Intake: When you are on a keto diet, you do not want to disrupt your state of ketosis. However, you also want to provide exceptional support for your body when introducing dietary changes. Collagen will give you an ideal type of protein without interrupting your diet.
During a fast, your body switches from using glucose as its primary energy source to using fat, known as ketosis. Introducing proteins, like collagen, into the body can interrupt this process because amino acids in protein can be converted into glucose through gluconeogenesis.
Your liver breaks down fat and converts it to energy and cholesterol. A high-fat diet like the keto diet can cause fat to build up in your liver and lead to fatty liver disease. Animal studies suggest the keto diet can cause non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, or NAFLD, and raise liver enzyme levels.
Specifically, the 5-g dose of collagen peptides caused a 41% reduction in fasting blood glucose level, whereas the 2.5-g collagen dose caused only a 15% reduction.
Directions: Take 1 serving 1-2 times daily or as directed by your healthcare practitioner.Blend, shake or briskly stir 2 scoops (40 g) of Ketogenic Collagen into 8 fluid ounces of chilled water. This product is non-GMO and gluten-free.
Generally speaking, most people on the keto diet should only consume 20-60 grams of carbs per day. To keep your diet on track, you'll want to consume keto bread that is between 8-10 total carbs per serving size.
Sourdough is a traditional favorite, and thanks to the Great Low Carb Bread Co. you can now fit it in your keto plan. Each slice of this sourdough bread has 8 grams of carbohydrates, 7 grams of fiber, 3 grams of fat, and 7 grams of protein, making it perfectly balanced for a keto diet. And it's delicious, too.
Collagen protein by itself is not a complete protein, and if you want complete vs incomplete proteins, then you need to be aware of that when consuming a collagen supplement. So now that you know collagen does not have carbs, and is keto-friendly, how much of it should you be taking?
Keto collagen supplementation not only temporarily increases the amount of collagen in your body and skin, it also encourages your body to produce more collagen and higher quality collagen, which improves your skin health long term.
