We finally get to review the last big Hybridcasual game on the market missing in our series, Alien Invasion 👽. Not only the game has very unique core gameplay, but the numbers speak for itself - 5 Mil. downloads and $6 Mil. overall revenue for last month 🤑 (Sadness multiplier included 😭)The core gameplay reminds me of the Hole.io mechanic, where it was just so satisfying to consume stuff 😋 , which would make you bigger. This of course was not scalable long-term, that's why the game was PvP. Here they structured it around similar idea, but it is nicely scaled with a very long progression, where this works pretty much forever now that the expansion of power is controlled through upgrades 📈. This is definitely a more IAP 💰 focused Hybrid, then the others we covered. You can see it immediately where some upgrades such as Custov's Farm (Starcraft's Stukov 😎) are completely locked behind Hard Currency. This also applies to loader drone and other important upgrades. The only way to get HC? Very limited sources, so this makes their Subscription very appealing. Rewarded ads placement are also pretty fleshed out, and the usual sudden boost of soft currency really helps your progression on the upgrade chart. Game Launchers: Designing a Product Users Might Resist ❌ The digitization of practically every aspect of life, including entertainment, has given rise to the game launchers. These launchers, to put it mildly, have not been well-received by the gaming community.When Larian Studios commissioned us to design and execute the Larian Launcher, we faced a significant challenge in understanding the sentiments of video game enthusiasts. So, how did we approach this project?Throughout the process, our guiding principle was simplicity. To minimize unpleasant experiences when launching a game, we opted for a clean, intuitive design that matches Larian's aesthetics.The central space features in-game graphics with a highlighted launching button. Essential links, such as user account access, game mods management, help, and bug reporting, stand out in the top menu. 🚀 Feature Friday: Soaring High with Flight Paths in My Game 🦅✨Welcome back to another Feature Friday! This week, I'm excited to share with you how I implemented Flight Paths in my game, inspired by #worldofwarcraft .💡 The ProblemAs I expanded my game with additional zones, I realized that traveling between them was becoming increasingly time-consuming. To address this issue, I sought to develop an immersive system that would enable players to swiftly move between locations, without the need for manual navigation across the entire map.🛠️ The SolutionTaking inspiration from World of Warcraft's Flight Path system, I decided to design a network of flight routes that players could access at various points in the game world. These routes would allow players to travel from one location to another on the back of a majestic flying creature while enjoying the beautiful scenery.🗺️ Designing the Flight Path Network:I started by mapping out the key locations in the game world and connecting them with a series of flight paths. The routes were designed to be visually appealing, taking players over landscapes and avoiding obstacles like mountains and forests.🎮 Integrating with the Game:I added Flight Master NPCs at each flight point, allowing players to interact with them to access the flight path network. Once a player selects a destination, the game calculates the optimal route, and the player's character hops on the flying creature to begin their journey.🛠️ The Implementation (Stuff for Nerds)Each flight path comprises a series of waypoints that the player traverses. To ensure a smooth journey, I use a spline function to interpolate the player's position between these waypoints. Moreover, each flight path maintains a list of its connections to other flight paths. When a player interacts with a flight master, they are presented with all directly connected flight paths as well as any additional linked paths. Upon selecting a destination, a simple pathfinding algorithm calculates the shortest route for the player to follow.🎊 The ResultsThe Flight Path system offers players an immersive way to travel between locations, reducing the time spent on manual travel and enhancing the overall game experience.I hope you enjoyed this week's Feature Friday!
