How far in advance can I make this recipe?

I usually make this recipe and eat it within the same day. However, you can make it in advance. You could easily make it the day before and it would be just fine.

However, I would not make it more than 24 hours in advance. This salad is best when it is served fresh.

How could I make this recipe a little more healthy?

For this recipe, I like to replace the sour cream with plain Greek yogurt. It does taste a little better and has a better texture with the sour cream, but it is a very small change.

I also like to use an olive oil based mayonnaise.

Add a little more flavor:

This salad is delicious as is, however, I like to add a little ranch seasoning mix to give it just a little extra flavor. It is so yummy with a little kick of ranch seasoning mix.

Would any potato work for this recipe?

For this recipe, we used baby red potatoes, however, really any potato would work for this recipe. I have never made it using sweet potatoes because I usually use baby reds.

I have made this recipe using russet potatoes and it was absolutely scrumptious. You can also peel the potatoes, or keep the skin on. I like the texture of the skin, so I usually keep it on.

You could also use golden yukon potatoes. My friend makes her potato salad with them, and it is delicious every time.

Should you add salt to water when boiling potatoes for potato salad? ›

Dense potatoes don't absorb seasonings easily, so you'll need to salt the water liberally so that the water the potatoes do drink up also carries in seasoning. And because potatoes are so timid in flavor, they need that salt to bring them out of their shells. Pour some salt in, then keep going.

What is potato salad dressing made of? ›

Mix mayonnaise, vinegar, mustard, salt and pepper in large glass or plastic bowl. Add potatoes, celery and onion; toss. Stir in eggs. Sprinkle with paprika.

Should I cut potatoes before boiling for potato salad? ›

Peeled potatoes.

Should you boil potatoes whole or cut up? ›

Larger potatoes should be cubed to ensure they cook evenly (peeled first if desired). Smaller potatoes tend to have thin skins and can be boiled whole, no peeling required.

Is it better to boil potatoes whole or cut up for potato salad? ›

Starchy potatoes should be cooked whole with the skin on, then peeled and cut after they're cooked. Select medium Russet potatoes, not large ones, to ensure the skin doesn't split while cooking. Peel them when they're hot (wearing disposable gloves to protect your hands from the heat), then cut them into cubes.

Should potatoes be cool before adding mayonnaise? ›

Some people say potato salad tastes better the next day. Even if you're not in that camp, you need to allow about one hour for the potatoes to cool before adding the mayonnaise.

What kind of potatoes are best for potato salad? ›

Waxy potatoes are generally considered the best for classic potato salad because they retain their shape, you don't have to peel them, and they have a smooth texture.

Is it better to make potato salad the night before? ›

Yes, potato salad gets even better if left to sit overnight in the fridge. The flavors combine and the potatoes absorb more of the seasoning/dressing, making for a more flavorful experience.

Do you have to wait for potatoes to cool before making potato salad? ›

Yes, if your potato salad is a cold salad, as most are, allow the cooked potatoes to cool to room temperature before adding the dressing and other ingredients.

Can you cut up potatoes ahead of time for potato salad? ›

If you're here, you'll probably be glad to know that yes, you can peel and cut potatoes the day before you plan to serve them — and that it's super easy! All you have to do is submerge the bare potato pieces in water and refrigerate (more on that later).
