Grandma's Three Fruit Marmalade Recipe | Pip Magazine (2024)

Do you have a surplus of oranges, grapefruits and lemons at your disposal? Here’s a simple three fruitmarmaladerecipe just like Grandma used to make.

What do you do with all those gifted grapefruits when you’re not a big fan? Well, recently I was gifted a few grapefruits, the local wholefoods shop was giving away marmalade oranges and my lemon tree was dripping, so I thought it was time to follow an old-fashioned marmalade recipe, just like my mum used to make.

Stupidly I started scouring the internet for recipes and none of them seemed to be the marmalade I remembered. Then the obviousness of the solution hit me in the face. Why don’t I go directly to the source?

A simple phone call and I had mum on the phone passing on her marmalade recipe, which it turns out was passed onto her from her mother. What a beautiful thing.

Sometimes we have to watch out that we don’t let all the information that is available on the internet stop us sharing these important rituals of passing on knowledge through generations.

For every one litre of fruit and liquid add 1.4kgs of sugar (or slightly less). To help set you can add the seeds you previously removed from the lemons and boil them either tied up in a muslin bag or in a sieve sitting in the liquid, keeping them separate from the liquid.

Boil briskly until setting point is reached. (Check this by placing a spoonful in a saucer and place in freezer to cool down, then see if set.)

Cool slightly then bottle.
